Italian fans are used to their side making slow starts at major tournaments, but Sunday's draw with New Zealand was alarming even by Azzurri standards. Marcello Lippi's side are now at real risk of exiting a World Cup at the opening group stage for the first time since 1974.
Italy were the first defending champions to fall at the first hurdle, meekly surrendering their crown in 1950. The same fate befell Brazil in 1966 and France in 2002. The Azzurri know only a win will guarantee progress to the last 16, although a score draw would also be enough if Paraguay's game with New Zealand finishes goalless.
There is even a scenario whereby the Azzurri's fate would be settled by the drawing of lots on Thursday evening. If Italy and New Zealand draw by the same scoreline, second place in Group F will be settled by a Fifa lottery in Soccer City. Should the Kiwis lose to Paraguay, Italy could advance to the last 16 despite drawing their first three games, just as they did in 1982, when they went on to lift the trophy.
Nothing but a win will suffice for Slovakia, who could also do with Paraguay beating New Zealand. Coach Vladimir Weiss has become increasingly exasperated with the Slovak media, who have turned on the side following defeat by Paraguay. According to a Slovakian newspaper, Weiss this week swore at the media during a news conference before returning to threaten one reporter.
